Is it abnormal to have ovarian cysts if you’re on birth control?

I am eighteen, and have been on birth control for nearly four years, but I was diagnosed with ovarian cysts today. Is this normal? I thought birth control made (harmless) ovarian cysts nearly impossible due to the lack of ovulation.

Does this mean the cysts are something worse?

that’s not true. birth control pills prevent ovulation and, to that end, MAY help to reduce cysts. however, they do not often fully prevent cysts from forming or worsening.

i thought that they would increase the chance as seen as your ovaries are so inactive?
    hmmm not sure

As others have said, birth control pills will sometimes prevent ovarian cysts, but not always. Because the causes of an ovary cyst can be wide ranging, it is often better to take a more hollistic approach to treatment and prevention (I’ve put a link below to some info on causes).

Please don’t panic that you might have something more serious – ovarian cysts are very common, even in those who take contraceptive pills.

Take a look a some of the other things that may have caused this occurence to further reduce the likelihood of you getting them.

Good luck, and I hope you get it sorted.
