Does anyone know someone who got negative effects from taking birth control & should I go on it?

I’m seriously considering going on the pill because I have ovarian cysts so I’m in pain when I ovulate and especially when I’m on my period and I’m sexually active and not trying to conceive. I’ve heard there are a lot of negative side effects like weight gain or even cancer. I would someday like to have children, just not yet, and cancer is very prominent in my family. Is it worth it or am I just stressing too much?

I’ve been on birth control for over 10 years to help with ovarian cysts and out of control, painful periods. In all that time, I’ve put on maybe 5 pounds. I can’t picture my life without all the benefits the pill gives me–super light periods, no cramps, no mood swings, the nice feeling of knowing exactly when my period will start. I plan to start my family in the next year and I’m dreading getting off the pill. All of my friends were on the pill and none of them have had problems getting pregnant. In your case, going on the pill could actually safeguard your fertility. I lost an ovary to a cyst. The longer you let cysts happen, the more chance you’re going to damage your ovaries.

Go talk to a doctor and explain all your concerns and get some expert medical advice. The risk for cancer is tiny. It was much higher years ago when birth control had much higher doses of hormones in them.
