Do you have to go to the hospital when ovarian pain starts up?

Ovarian Cysts – My friend gets ovarian cysts very frequently and what is supposed to happen when then start. Should I take her to the hospital? She is very sensitive to pain medicine so I cant give her anything too strong. I gave her 1/2 of a tylenol codene what should be done. If she waits will the pain start to go away?
This is the 3rd time in the past 2 months that this has occurd and all the dr’s do is give her pain medicine. They tested her and said the worst thing would be to remove 1 ovary… I don’t think so, there has got to be another way?

Have they performed a transvaginal ultrasound? This will show how big the cysts are and if they are in danger of bursting. If her doctor will not order the test then she should consult for a 2nd opinion.

Depends on how bad the pain is, I would think. Has a doctor ever evaluated this?

Most women get cysts during ovulation and don’t know it – they are lucky. The rest if us though will go through some pain every month. Cysts should be around no longer then a month but there will be new ones every month.

First she can go on birth control to stop the cysts from forming. Make sure it is not one that gives different levels during the month. If she can stop ovulation with birth control she can almost stop her cysts. I like the Nuva Ring http://www.nuvaring.com/Consumer/index.asp birth control I have been on that stopped my cysts.

She should go to the hospital if the pain is unbearable (one may have popped – trust me she will know) otherwise it is a waste of time and money they will tell her it is a cyst and send her home. A few hundred dollars to tell her something she already knows.

She should be getting trans-abdominal and trans-vaginal ultrasounds every 6 months to monitor their placement, size and type. If they are bad she will go almost monthly for these tests. The blood filled ones hurt the most like a deep knife in your side. The pain from all cysts will go a away but it will take a few weeks. If she has the same pain in the same place for more then to weeks or two consecutive cycles she needs to go to the Dr and get and ultrasound.

She will be fine if she works with her Dr.. If she has no insurance there maybe a hospital that treats for free when admitted through ER or a women’s clinic in the area that can help her.
