choosing a birth control for the first time? help please :)?

I am 19 years old and unfortunately i am starting to have some problems: endometriosis and ovarian cysts. so i am going to the doctors on wednesday and want to get started on birth control to help out with my situation.

So i was wondering if some lovely ladies could help me by saying what birth control they take and the pros and cons: clear skin, breast growth, weight gain, mood swings.

THANKS! :)

    I’m on Diane 35- (I’m in Canada)
I went on it to regulate my periods and give me clear skin.
I don’t beleive it’s advertised as a birth control in Canada. My nurse practioner told me that when I become sexually active, we’d need to change it.
But…..I have clear skin, slight wt gain, but then again I’m not active as I was so I can’t blame the pill, then again, what’s 5lbs if I have clear skin!
It all depends what you need the pill for I guess, if you aren’t sexually active and don’t intend to be for a while, then you could try it.
    Good luck.

I take Aviane. It’s a generic brand, so it’s cheap (with my insurance I get 3 months for $10). I had some slight issues with mood swings during my first month or two taking it, but no weight gain due to it. I did grow about half a cup size, but that was after taking it for 9 months, so I don’t know if it can be attributed to the pill.

Best thing. Doesn’t mess with your hormones. Use it only when you need it.
    A diaghram.

IUDs are the best but, you gotta be careful when the doc put it in your uterus or else, you’ll end up getting a uterine infection. I do not recommend the daily pill, it’s annoying taking it every day at the same time. Second best: Depo shot. You get the shot on our arm or buttocks every 3 months. There are aways pros and cons. I had an IUD for 1 yr, no problem whatsoever, had the pill for a few months stopped uz it was annoying, no problems with it. I currently and will stay with the depo shot for 5 yrs then stop. I get depressed when it wears off so, it I go get the next dosage, it helped my hair grow.Nothing else with it. If you choose the shot, do not do it long term, I’ll stop afterbeing on it for 5 yrs cuz your bones become less dense. NOT COOL! you can be on the IUD for 10yrs!!!! The only way you’ll know for sure is to try it.

    hey heather
i’m 19 too, and on the norimin pill… it’s 35mg so it’s pretty strong. i was on the levelen ED since i was 16, which was 25mg i think but it wasn’t strong enough for me and i got breakthrough bleeding.
On the levelen my skin didn’t really clear up that much, it was a little better but not perfect.
But on the norimin my skin is completely clear.
I don’t think my breasts have grown much from using either of these (still an A/small B unfortunately)… i think you are lucky if your breasts do grow significantly on any kind of pill.
I have actually lost weight since being on the pill, but I have been trying to lose weight so maybe that counteracted the weight gain. I think mainly weight gain being on the birth control pill is water retention, and that most people go on the pill when they get into a serious relationship, which is when a lot of people put on weight anyway.
Sometimes the norimin makes me feel sick if i haven’t eaten anything before taking it, or if i take two in a 12 hour period (like if i forget it one morning and take it at night, then take another the next morning). i usually end up vomiting if i take more than one. this didn’t happen with the levelen.
i have noticed i’m more moody with the norimin, particularly if i take them close together. I often get upset for no reason and quite sulky sometimes :P but this might be just me hehe.

hope this helped you a little.
your doctor should be able to recommend you one that will suit you, and you’ll probably have to try a couple before you find one that is right for you.
good luck with everything, i hope it all works out.

    Hi,
I’m on Yasminelle which I think is quite good. I’ve been on it for about 2 years. Its a lower dose than Yasmin I think and so is supposed to have less side effects. When I first started it I lost a little weight, my breasts also got bigger and my skin is really clear. I think it makes me a bit moodier though around my period but that aside I haven’t experienced any major changes or side effects.
I think that when I went on the pill it was the newest on the market and had the least amount of side effect, but as I said that was two years ago so I would advise that you go for the newest possible pill, a mini-pill or a lower dose pill as they are supposed to cause less side effects.

    Best of Luck
    Caroline :)

    Hi,

I also have endometriosis and I was on Tricyclin lo for several years no weight gain, no mood swings, no decrease in libido. I already have clear skin so I couldn’t tell you if it helps with that as well, no breast growth either. I’d recommend it.
