I gained almost 20 pounds in the past two weeks!!!?

Okay I count my calories, and they have been under 2,000 daily. I exercise about 5 times a week. I had a ovarian cyst rupture on Easter…I gained 6 lbs…now two weeks later, I started my period and have gained 18 POUNDS!!!!!! I don’t know what to do.

I work so hard to lose weight and just to gain it back. I can’t sleep because of this!!

Please Help.
18 pounds of water weight sound absurd…but if it is water would sitting in a sauna help?

The most likely answer is water retention. Women retain large amounts around their menstruation cycle to compensate for blood and tissue lost. Once its over, you should see a significant drop. Your body also retains water if you are not drinking enough of it daily as a defense mechanism. Half oz of water per pound of body weight is what is recommended, keeping in mind you do get some water from food. It is very possible you gained a couple pounds from being immobilized.

Don’t look at a scale to monitor bodyfat levels, as it doesnt account for added/lost muscle, added/lost bodyfat, water retention. If you are very curious, find some place nearby that does bodyfat measuring with calipers, underwater submersion etc. That gives you accurate bench marks to track progress.

It is not normal to gain 20 lbs in 2 weeks. You need to go see a doctor, it could be a sign of an illness.

Well, I can tell you for sure that it isn’t 20 lbs in fat. That’s because 1 lb fat = 3500 calories; 14 days * 2000 = 28,000 calories, and 28,000/3500 = 8 lbs of fat. And that’s if every last bit of food you ate was going to fat (which is impossible). If you gained any fat at all, I would think maybe a pound or two. Like others suggested, a visit to your doctor is a good idea.

  8. It’s pretty awesome having nutrition as my life. I always tell people when they ask me what kind of supplements to take. Start with the basics and get some whey protein as a body building supplement then if you want, try an EFA stack for weight loss. As always throw in a multivitamin.
