Could I have Polysystic Ovaries?
I have had ovarian cysts since I was 13. It caused me to gain weight and also I started my periods a little earlier than all the other girls.
I had 2 previous partners, one for 3 years and another for a year and didn’t get pregnant. I met my fiance in 2007 and we started TTC #1 and I fell pregnant in 4 months. After our daughter was about 1 month we decided to TTC#2 as I thought my cysts may make it harder for us to concieve.
Anyway, we have been TTC #2 for nearly 2.5 years and had no luck. We went to see GP at 18 months TTC but even though i mentioned my Ovarian cysts and my mothers fertility issues she just did a blood tests and said my hormones were ‘normal’. She told us to TTC longer and wait it out as we already have a daughter. She didn’t think my fiance’s sperm was an issue and decided not to test.
My periods are irregualr lengths and sometimes I have a short LP or a long LP of 18-20 days and sometimes it has been 14 days. I have been taking folic acid and pre-natal vitamin. I have bought some Vitamin B6 and started to drink Green Tea today to see if that helps. My fiance is also taking Zinc & Vitamin C for sperm quality. Is there anything I can do? I want my GP to check my ovaries to see if i may have poly ovaries without the hormone imbalance? But what is making my periods so irregular?
We are now moving GP’s and hope to get a second opinion. What do you ladies think? Thanks =)

My chart – it seems to be that I may be Ovulating now from my temps so maybe this is another short cycle for me?

I’d say PCOS is possible. However, some women have polycystic ovaries and don’t have the syndrome. Polycystic ovaries only is PCO versus PCOS which is a whole syndrome of symptoms.
PCOS is a complex and complicated condition. From the chart I saw and your cycles listed, you are either ovulating late in your cycle or ovulating irregularly, which means you are struggling to ovulate. Coupled with the fluctuating luteal phases…. it’s all pointing to a hormone issue.
Because PCOS is so complex, it’s best to be tested by a specialist. Most GPs and even GYNOs have limited knowledge and experience with it. Your best bet is to see an OBGYN who sees PCOS patients regularly (versus a random patient here and there)… or even BETTER, see an RE. REs have extensive training and knowledge with PCOS and infertility. If you’ve been TTC for 18 months, it’s time to see a specialist anyway. For your doctor to suggest waiting even longer was questionable and inappropriate.
Good luck.
i’d say PCOS is a good possibility based on all your symptoms. I have PCOS and it took me 3 years with my first one. Now I am TTC#2 as well but have only tried for two months now. The doc can do a blood test to see if it is PCOS and then I think they could put you on Clomid to try and help you ovulate. Good luck and baby dust!
