i just found i have PCOS..?

the nurse practitioner put me on metformin 500 because my insulin level was high, not low and I’ve had irregular periods since I was 11. but it didn’t regulate it and my insulin had lowered a great amount. The nurse couldn’t figure out what was wrong. But another nurse had given me some information on PCOS. so I did some research on it. and come to find out, I had every last symptom that was listed. So my mom asked the nurse to get me tested. they did an ultra sound to see if there were cyst or anything, both inside and out. they called a few days later and told me I had polycystic ovarian syndrome. ones busted or something ,I have cyst, and I have fluid on the lining. something like that. my mom was in a hurry and didn’t tell me where I could understand. Anyways, the nurse wants to put me on birth control, but isn’t that used for the same reason metformin is? and is one of the side effects for metformin weight gain? because my weight is always constantly up and down,. out of nowhere I’ll lose 10 pounds and then gain 13 back. But when I went to the doctor about one in a half weeks ago, came back and found out I gained 10 pounds in only a week and a couple of days. I’m pretty sure it was the medicine, I’ve never gained that much weight in a week or so. should I tell the nurse? or should I just start watching what I eat? so after I take the pill, what’s next? is that it? I’ll still be able to have children, right? it’ll just be harder for me to conceive? or is there more to it?
im by the way =P

PCOS is a very complex condition. I had it for years,, the metformin if it’s working correctly should help you lose weight cuz it should help regulate your insulin levels. The birth control pills are to help regulate your periods, and maintain hormone levels.

If you are gaining and losing weight like that then YES by all means speak to the dr about that,, it’s not healthy at all.

You might or might not be able to have children,, it depends on if they get the PCOS under control,, and if there has already been long term damage. You might have to have fertility treatments ect.

And it’s always a good idea to watch what you eat, and to try and eat the most healthy way possible.

I would do alot of research on the web, and talk openly with your dr,, when you make your appointment you might ask to get a double appt time, so you have enough time to talk to the dr and get all your questions answered,, alot of time they only scheldule appts for 15 mins,, and it’s hard to get all your information in that amount of time.

    Good luck

eat like a diabetic seriously. I was diagnosed with PCOS at 19. I had battled with my weight and knew something was wrong. I had every sign of PCOS including ovaries covered with cysts. I did my research and found that with the insulin resistance that if you restrict your carb intake and eliminate carbs like breads, pastas, sweets, cereals and rice and watch you pop and sugary drink intake like diabetics do that you can lose the weight and regain control. Sure enough i did that lost 50 lbs and got pregnant with no help from any drugs:-) I am now having my third son in October.
