What is a Dermoid Cyst in the ovary?
A Dermoid cyst is one of those strange cysts that can develop in the ovary. Is develops in a different location in the ovary than regular ovarian cysts. This type of cyst develops in a type of totipotential cell. It is called this way because these tissues or cells can produce any type of tissue. For this reason many times these dermoid cysts can have teeth, thyroid tissue, hair, bone, oil glands of the skin…you name it.
The average age for getting these is the age of 30. Usually women who develop these cysts will have them in both ovaries. They also can grow quite large sometimes up to 17 inches or more. One thing good is that they are usually benign. Only about 2% can turn cancerous.
They can develop complication especially if they get too large. They can rupture and cause pain and the build up of scars in the pelvic area. But the most serious complication is that of torsion and twisting of the ovary which is a medical emergency.
Severe lower abdomen pain is the most common symptom if there is twisting. The reason for this is that the twisting stops the circulation to the ovary.
These cysts are also know as teratomas.
The best treatment for this type of cyst is surgical removal.

You know so many interesting infomation. You might be very wise. I like such people. Don’t top writing.
i have an ovarian cyst which is suspected as a dermoid. Its very painful and therefore i have had my operation cut from being 3 months away to 4weeks. I am very nervous. At only 17 i’m not looking forward to scars and i’m jst trying to find out some more about them and the procedure. Mine is very large now for such a small person. I have been on the pill and i wonder if they are linked.
Definitely. No matter what other say about birth control…I have seen a direct correlation with taking external hormones, hormones in foods and from xenobiotics (chemicals) and the different types of females problems including ovarian cysts, fibrocystic disease, fibroids and other forms of female diseases. I highly recommend you change the life-style and start eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables. Reduce fat to 20%. Stay away from junk food and hormones.
I had an dermoid ovarian cyst removed four days ago. One of the first things the nurses asked was if I recently started using birth control. I am 29 and have been on birth control since I was 20. They figure there was another cause in my case. I had laparoscopy and the incisions are relatively small so any scars should be small as well. Recovery has been hard for me and fairly quick, but I am not as young are you are. I think this pain is worth it if I will not have the pain from the cyst. Good luck to you! This is not your fault, it is just something you have to deal with.
Hi Flir, LC and YP,
I just had one removed yesterday, and I’d never heard about them before this. They’re pretty gross! I still can’t get over how disgusting the little buggers are… bleh! Glad mine’s out.
Using vitamin E really helps minimalize scars, there’s also a scar gel out there that may help. I have 3 incisions that are pretty small. All I do is bite open a 400 I.U. pill and rub it on the spot–I will wait until the 3 areas are well on their way to healing though (don’t want to put vit.E on fresh wounds).
In regards to birth control–I took birth control for 2 weeks when I was 24, then stopped (I didn’t like it). I am now 30 and I started birth control AFTER they spotted the cyst in an ultrasound (they thought it was endometriosis, as my sister had that). I would say that dermoid cysts are not necessarily linked with birth control, as I am a case that wasn’t taking it. I think it just happens.
With that, I am going to take some more pain killers now!
Hope your recovery is going well, you must’ve had your surgery a week or two ago.
Cheers!
I WILL SAY FLIR THAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW SOME OF THE SAME THINGS THAT YOU ARE ASKING. I AM 25 AND APARENTLY HAVE HAD THIS DERMOID FOR SOME TIME NOW AND ME BEING HARD HEADED I HAVE IGNORED THIS PAIN FOR FEAR OF WHAT IT MIGHT BE! I AM VERY PROUD OF THE FACT THAT YOU ARE TAKING CARE OF YOUR ISSUE AND PLEASE LET US KNOW HOW UR SUGERY WENT SINCE I WILL BE HAVING TO DO THE SAME THING SOON
Good post,This was exactly what I needed to read today! I am sure this has relevance to many of us out there.
I had an MRI on Tuesday and have just found out today that I have a dermoid cyst…Is there much pain after the surgery? Is it “same day surgery”?… I have an appointment with my OBGYN next Thursday and I’m full of questions..feeling a little anxious til then:)
I had mine out on 10/26. I had no pain but gyno found it during my annual exam (don’t know why she hadn’t found it before). She doesn’t do laproscopy so I have a 2 inch incision. She had to remove the ovary. The other ovary had a node so she removed that part and left the ovary. I’m 49 but I didn’t want a hysterectomy unless necessary. The pain isn’t that bad but the hospital stay was (why are nurses so noisy at night?). I just take 2 motrin every 6 hrs and now after 5 days I have almost no discomfort. Good luck and try not to worry. I was a weepy mess the day of the operation so I know how you feel.
Hi Jenna,
Maybe You can help me. I had an MRI at the begining of October, but my gynecologist(s) (I use plural because 4 doctors have seen me from October!) couldn’t tell me what it is inside me (in the place of right ovary), they suspect dermoid cyst, but saying very atypical. Unfotunatelly they only use ultrasound and don’t want to see my MRI, so I need to find someone who can check my MRI and say something about it.
I will go to surgery, but only in January (?) although by now I have continuously pain in my pelvic region. I am affraid.
So if you read it, could you write me in private to this e-mail: vozaragi@hotmail.com
Thanks forward!
Hi everyone.
i too had a dermoid cyst at 24. This was last November and i was 16wks pregnant when i had the cyst removed. Becasuse the size of the cyst (a football apparently)i had to have a laporotomy, and my left ovary removed which was full on surgery. i recoverd pretty well and my baby boy was fine and is now six months old. if i hadnt of gotten pregnant when i did we would never have found the cyst as i had no symptoms and who knows what would have happend, my little angel :0) my advice is not to worry. i havent been on the pill for almosT 5 years so i dont know weather there is a link, it would be interesting to see though. Good luck to all that are having surgery, im sure you will be fine

I am pondering hiring, Patti Allen, the chief interior designer with McConnel Allen Interior Design, A Dallas Interior Design Company. This is my first interior design endeavor and I am not confident what I should inquire about to appraise if she is right for me.
A few hints regarding what question I should ask are exceptionally advantageous!

I would like to say that this post really forced me to do so! I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
My daughter (who just turned 12) was diagnosed with having one of these today. TWELVE! She has only had her period for 8 months but they always last two weeks or more. They have lasted for 3 weeks this time and the last 5 days she has had heavy bleeding and clots!
The doc says the long periods are prolly due to the cyst. She had a MRI today and is schedualed for surgery in 6 days.

I Liked reading this post. Quite some usefull fitness info in it for me :). And after reading this i think you will really like the book Burn The Fat Feed The Muscle. To me this is like the health and fitness bible. Last year i lost almost 25 pounds and gained an inch on my arms in 12 weeks. What you describe here does resemble the book a bit, but there is so much more! I added the link in my name so you dont have to search for it ;). Again, nice post and i hope you keep it up!
