Could it be polycystic ovarian syndrome?

Okay, so, i had gone to me doctor to get on birth control and talked to her about the fact, i haddent had my peirod in over five months, and last time i had it, it lasted two weeks. Ever since i gave birth about 5 years ago, my periods have been very irragular, sometimes i wouldnt have them for a month or three at a time, but this is the longest iv gone with our one. She did a pulvic exaim and told me, i did, in fact have several cyst on my ovarys, but they schedualed an ultrasound and drew blood just to make sure. But iv done alittle research on polycystic ovarian syndrome, and things just dont seem to add up, some of the Symptoms just dont match with out a known cause, such are facial hair, or alot of hair, i dont have any problems with that, never have, i have probably the normal amount of hair that any woman has….well not any, but i know i have normal hair growth, and my acne, i have it, like everyone else, but, its nothing that is OUT there, i have break out periods, but nothing a person my age (20) shouldnt have, its never been a major problem, my weight gain is due to the medications i take, i know that one for a fact :( the only time i ever had a major problem with dandruff was when i went swimming in a lake, and the water dryed my scalp out, after a few weeks, it was better, and iv not had problems since. I have had major infertility problems, iv been married almost two years and have yet to use a condom with him, i always thought it was him, but, im assuming its me now.Skin discolorations, im as pale as they come, i might be a tad pasty with my lack of sunlight, but nothing abnormal. High cholesterol levels, and blood pressure, both are excallent, doctors compliment me all the time on them, NEVER been a problem. And i saw one about depression, which, that cant be judge, i have three types of depression, i really couldnt tell if that was one of my symptoms. None the less, now maybe you can see my concern, can anyone tell me what i should be looking into?!

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome help?

I was kind of curious about it, my girlfriend’s doctor has told her since she was 14 that she has this, but she doesn’t match the symptoms that comes with it, she isn’t in any way over weight, she has no problems losing weight in fact she finds it hard to gain any, even pregnant she had problems gaining weight, and usually it causes women to not have their periods or for them to be very light (I did some research) But hers are heavy. And with PCOS, the cysts are usually small, and don’t cause a lot of pain. But hers aren’t small and cause her more pain then giving birth according to her and she had no drugs when having our daughter if that tells you anything.
My girlfriend’s symptoms are completely different.
1. She’s very tiny (5 ft. even never weighs over 110 lbs. even pregnant she was 138)
2. She doesn’t have acne at all her skin is always so beautiful.
3. Her periods are heavy and very irregular. (one can last a few days another a few weeks) we’ve been together almost two years and she’s been to the ER three times from losing too much blood due to her period.
4. She has the worst pains ever in her lower stomach, she says their like craps but much worse, I’ve set up many of nights with her trying to comfort her, and I hate hearing her cry over it.
5. They say women with PCOS have problems getting pregnant, birth control does nothing for preventing pregnancy with my girlfriend. She’s a very fertile little thing.

And these are just a few, the only problems I’ve noticed that she has are the cysts, and the high blood pressure, but even the blood pressure is a new symptom, she just got that one a couple of months ago yet she’s apperently had PCOS for the last 5 to 6 years if not longer, ever since she started her periods she says she’s had problems with them, her grandparents however thought she was making it up, so of course it went untreated until she was 14.

So really any info you can give on this would be a huge help.
I personally have a gut feeling that she doesn’t have this, especially since I know personally that her Dr. is a quack, but I could be wrong, after all I’m no Dr. myself, but even my Brother who is in medical school finds it fishy, my mother and sister who are each a nurse, and my uncle, who is and has been a Dr. for 23 years. They all say something doesn’t match up.

Are there any other types of cysts that cause the pains and the heavy bleeding? She has multiple cysts on each ovary, but they aren’t small and they cause many problems, and the Drs keep telling her that if they keep any worse they will have to remove her ovaries, at least one of them anyway, and they say that stress causes them to grow in size and get worse and that she shouldn’t stress out and they have even told her that if they get worse she could possibly die from it. Now I’m not Dr. but that sounds like a load of bulls*** to me, Any comments? Maybe even in the future this can help other women with the same problem.
No she doesn’t have any extra hair growth she has problems even getting her hair to grow longer, she’s been trying for a year to get it back the length it was when we met.

and she’s been on two different types of the bill, both have caused her to have seizures, and haven’t done any good for her periods or anything else for that matter, and the drs say there is only two types of birth control she can take for PCOS. which is why I came here. and like I said before, she has no problems getting pregnant, she had a micarriage once within the first two months we were together (long story stress caused that one) and then had our daughter, and recently we found out she was pregnant again, (stress again caused a miscarriage, along with a couple of accidents caused by an ex boyfriend.) Everything her Dr. says confuses me, so do the websites for the subject.

femcon fe side effects?

I started taking this to shrink an ovarian cyst. Worked like a charm, and loved not having the monthly "acne" however….. In 8 months I have gained 20 pounds and have hit an emotional low. I run daily, and hit the weights as well….. I switched back to the Tri-Cyclean Lo, and am already feeling better.

Period-like vaginal bleeding for 4 weeks

Kinda graphic:

Background: I’m 27 year-old female. I have 1 child and had a miscarriage in November 2005. I have gained a significant amount of weight over the past 2 years (about 50 lbs). I believe that I may have PCOS, because I have had abnormal or no periods over the past 2 years in addition to acne, some facial hair growth and symptoms of metabolic syndrome (boderline cholesterol, glucose, and carrying most of my weight around my middle.)

My question is this; I started my period on July 2, 2008. Nothing crazy, not real heavy, no cramping or anything. It lasted for about 5 days (like usual for me). I stopped for about 2 days and then started bleeding again. Not just spotting, I mean… full-blown period. This bleeding has been going on for about 4 weeks, and I am STILL bleeding! I thought it was worse in the AM, so I was thinking fibroids, but now I’ve realized that it is heavy all day long. It’s also more of a brighter red than I am used to for menstrual bleeding. I know that PCOS affects your hormones and maybe something is going on inside of me that is telling my body to bleed. I am starting to have cramps and feeling very tired. I have been taking Iron supplements and Ibuprofen to ease the cramping. And I have especially been having pain in my lower left side. I have had 1 ovarian cyst before, but this hurts waaaay worse.

Whats going on? Any ideas? I am sick of this. I do not have health insurance so I don’t want to go run up a bill at the hospital, but I am getting tired of this. I feel like the punchline of that joke, :why shouldn’t you ever trust a women? Because you don’t trust anything that can bleed for five days straight and not die!

By the way I’m a RN, so please don’t yell at me. Please let me know if anyone else has had anything like this.

Questions about Mirena?

I just had my second child and been suffering for years now with long heavy periods. My ob/gyn recommend placing me on Mirena. I have read about side affects such as weight gain, acne, ovarian cyst, ifections, abdominal pain. How serious are the side effects from being on Mirena and how common is it that I will have side effects. I have been on the pill in the past but it did not help with the long heavy periods and I did gain a good amount of weight being on the pill. I had a baby 11 weeks ago and it trying to get ride of the extra weight but now that I am about to be put on mirena I am afraid I am going to gain a mess of weight. Another thing is my period are really heavy, i can’t wear tampons and they last about 2 weeks heavy the entire time, will Mirena help with the heaviness?

how common are the side effects of alesse-28?

okay, recently i wen to the gyno for an ultra sound due to severe pelvic pain. they found that i had a ovarian cyst rupture and perscribed Aless-28 to help reduce my risk of getting another one. I think im getting the generic form, im only 15 and ive read alot of really bad reviews. i heard it causes acne and weight gain. i already have a problem with acne and i really dont want to gain any weight because ive been trying to lose some. im already 141 pounds and 5/7 so i look fine but still. im really worried because of all the bad side effects. just wondering how it could possibly effect a 15 year old girl (who is not active by the way, just need it so my sticking ovary dosent rupture).

Can ovarian cysts cause sciatic pain?

Hi. I am very suspicious that I have an ovarian cyst. I had one a year ago and it disapeared. This time my symptoms are exactly the same. Irregualr periods, pain in breasts, acne….etc. Can a cyst cause pain in your sciatic nerve? I can’t sleep at night because its so uncomfortable. The pain is mostly in my rear (right side)

Honest opinion about birth control.?

OK, so here’s my situation, I am a 24 year old overall healthy female. Recently my dcotor prescribed Yaz birth control to me due to having ovarian cysts. I have never been on any type of birth control for fear of what most woman fear; weight gain, bigger boobs (well some woman anyway), headaches, nasuea, etc etc etc…all the bad side effects.
Every woman’s body is different…yes I know that. But I don’t know what to do. In the recent months I have been bothered by weird acne break outs constantly that will not clear up. As soon as some clear, I break out elsewhere (it’s rather annoying)! I didn’t have acne as an adolscent, why should I have it now? I’m aslo having to deal with abnormally oily/greasy hair, which is also very annoying and very inconvenient when I have to wash and blow dry my hair every single day (which I don’t because it’s inconvenient).
My doctor attributed these symptoms of hormonal imbalances as the primary cause and therefore prescribed Yaz.
I’ve always been anti-birth control pills, but am finding myself in desperation. I am currently a C cup and DON’T want to get bigger boobs.I’ve also suffered from migraines in the past and have heard that BC can trigger them…as for my period itself, well it’s quite manageable. I have normal periods and they don’t really bother me so taking BC is not really to "regulate them" for I already am. It would be more for the acne, greasy hair and of course, to avoid pregnancy since my hubby and I are not ready for that just yet.

Anyway sorry this is so long, but has anyone else been in this or a similar situation? If so what did you do or what would you suggest?

Thanks in advance!

New birth control pill….?

Does or has anyone here used the Loette birth control pill and if so, could anyone tell me whether they have had any side effects like mood swings, acne, vomitting, weight gain, headaches etc, about their experience of using Loette and how this pill compares to other birth control pills? I am 25 yrs old and was very recently put on this pill to help treat ovarian cysts.

Can Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome go away?

I went on the pill when I was 16. I was on it for 4 years for the duration of a relationship. When we broke up I went off the pill. My skin broke out, I gained a ton of weight, I didn’t have a period for almost a year, I had insulin resistance, elevated testosterone levels, dark skin on my armpits and one ovarian cyst that put me in the hospital. My doctor told me I had PCOS and there wasn’t much I could do about it except go back on the pill. I refused because I was sure that this is what caused my problems in the first place.

Now it has been about 18 months since I’ve been off the pill and I’m finally back to normal. No acne, regular periods, 112 lbs at 5′5. I haven’t had any blood work done, so I don’t know if my blood sugar or hormone levels are normal, but I assume they are since I’m having regular periods and the dark patches under my arms are gone (a sign on insulin resistance).

Do you think that my "PCOS" has gone away or do you think I still might have it? Or do you think this was just a bad reaction to my hormones stabilizing after being on the pill?

I have ovarian cysts, heavy periods, bad acne, and mood changes (extreme anxiety) before my period. With my last contraceptive pill (Yasmin) I gained weight, was nauseous all the time and lost my energy, so I would prefer a hormonal contraceptive pill that wouldn’t do that to me.

I am freaking out, and crying too because you can not bear children, I have the irregular periods [sometimes they for a week but only for half of each day] and i have the acne [runs in family though] and sleep apnea because i sometimes just quit breathing when i am trying to go to sleep….and i do got all the increased hair on me but its not on the neck. and i used to have depression. i am pretty tiny though.

do u think i can have it?!

Not all women with PCOS share the same symptoms. These are some of the symptoms of PCOS:
* infrequent menstrual periods, no menstrual periods, and/or irregular bleeding
* infertility (not able to get pregnant) because of not ovulating
* increased hair growth on the face, chest, stomach, back, thumbs, or toes—a condition called hirsutism (HER-suh-tiz-um)
* ovarian cysts
* acne, oily skin, or dandruff
* weight gain or obesity, usually carrying extra weight around the waist
* insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
* high cholesterol
* high blood pressure
* male-pattern baldness or thinning hair
* patches of thickened and dark brown or black skin on the neck, arms, breasts, or thighs
* skin tags, or tiny excess flaps of skin in the armpits or neck area
* pelvic pain
* anxiety or depression due to appearance and/or infertility
* sleep apnea—excessive snoring and times when breathing stops while asleep
please help i am totally bummed out

Can ovarian cysts prevent your period from coming? I went to the doctors and had an ultra sound,due to my missed periods.And It showed that I has multiple cysts on both ovaries.I have no other symptoms of PCOS,and the doctor said nothing about it.Just that she would put me on birth control and provera,and that I was perfectly fine.I just turned 18 and I have always been regular and healthy,what causes these cysts and how do you know if it’s PCOS? is there any other types of Ovarian cysts that do the same thing? (without PCOS symptoms..Acne,weight gain,insulin resistance..etc) I’m very confused about all this,and I want to know what I should be looking for,Incase I do need to get another doctor.

This might be a little long to explain it all, sorry ahead of time.

Recently I decided to go to a Doctor’s Weight Loss Clinic. I had gained over 60 pounds in one year for no reason, and it was impossible to lose the weight and keep it off despite healthy diet and daily exercise routine. The weight doctor seemed to think I had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and said I needed to be tested by a gyno. Thankfully the diet is working. I lost 15 pounds in one month. Unfortunately these results have come with odd problems that can’t seem to be explained.

Not even a week after starting the diet I began a very painful and random period even though I’m on the pill. A few days later after I started my period, I ended up having a cyst that ruptured. Finally I healed and my period ended from that, but exactly a week later I started another period. That period has ended, but seems to have caused more issues. I don’t know if I have another cyst or not, but I’m back to having constant abdominal pain. All through this my hormones have gone nuts. It has caused me to get severe acne, and making things things extremely sensitive to say the least.

I went to the gyno and she basically blew me off. She said it had nothing to do with the diet, the cyst came from me skipping a pill or taking it at the wrong time (I’ve been on birth control for 12 years now, I don’t ever forget to take the pill, and I take it at the same time every night), and that things will just be odd for a month. She also refused to test me for PCOS stating that if I had it, she would just put me on birth control and since I’m already on it, it doesn’t matter. Despite me being in pain, and having some of the same symptoms all over again, she didn’t check to see if I even had another cyst. Furthermore she prescribed another birth control pill similar to what I was on that has low estrogen and progestin, which means it won’t be effective in shrinking or preventing more cysts.

I then talked to the weight doctor, and he had never heard of such problems. I am currently on a low glycemic index impact diet, which is suppose to help PCOS if I have it. Earlier this year I had started a similar diet and started a random period then too, but didn’t stay on the diet. This leads me to believe it’s the diet, and not any of the medications he has put me on. Also, none of the meds have been known to cause these side effects. I have never had a cyst before that I knew about, and certainly didn’t cause these kind of problems. He seemed to be clueless about if PCOS could have caused this. I have another gyno appointment Monday, but I’m looking to see if anyone has experienced similar problems. Has anyone heard of a diet low in sugar throwing off hormones that bad and that fast? I’m desperate, and am in so much pain all the time.

Here is what the weight doctor prescribed:
-low impact glycemic index diet.
-Phentermine 37.5mg
-Once a week fat burning shots that include B 12, B complex, and Lipovite
