i just found i have PCOS..?

the nurse practitioner put me on metformin 500 because my insulin level was high, not low and I’ve had irregular periods since I was 11. but it didn’t regulate it and my insulin had lowered a great amount. The nurse couldn’t figure out what was wrong. But another nurse had given me some information on PCOS. so I did some research on it. and come to find out, I had every last symptom that was listed. So my mom asked the nurse to get me tested. they did an ultra sound to see if there were cyst or anything, both inside and out. they called a few days later and told me I had polycystic ovarian syndrome. ones busted or something ,I have cyst, and I have fluid on the lining. something like that. my mom was in a hurry and didn’t tell me where I could understand. Anyways, the nurse wants to put me on birth control, but isn’t that used for the same reason metformin is? and is one of the side effects for metformin weight gain? because my weight is always constantly up and down,. out of nowhere I’ll lose 10 pounds and then gain 13 back. But when I went to the doctor about one in a half weeks ago, came back and found out I gained 10 pounds in only a week and a couple of days. I’m pretty sure it was the medicine, I’ve never gained that much weight in a week or so. should I tell the nurse? or should I just start watching what I eat? so after I take the pill, what’s next? is that it? I’ll still be able to have children, right? it’ll just be harder for me to conceive? or is there more to it?
im by the way =P

I’ve always suffered with excessive weight gain from childhood and even more so through my teenage years. I am now 14 stone at the age of 23. I have hair growth on my face and tmi but really long pubic hair. I have irregular periods and irregular ovulation. My periods are painful and heavy. But when i started my periods I was at a young age and started having them once a year or every six months untill i became sexually active. I have irregular twinges and dull aches throughout my entire cycle which can be painfull and hard to live everyday life. Ive tried losing weight but it just wont shift. I eat healthy, take vitamins i don’t drink or smoke either.

My family history is my mother couldn’t concieve for 10 years. My father has Type 2 Diabeties, High blood pressure & high cholestrol.

It took around 4 years to get pregnant and we have been TTC #2 now for 2.5 years almost. Ive had ultrasounds (Ovarian Cysts on both ovaries 5cm each), swab tests and blood tests (which apparently came back normal) but I am totally convinced I have PCOS. But the GP won’t do anything says we are young and already have a child. But tomorrow we are going for a second opinion with charts and research of PCOS.

I’d like to know how long it took for you to be diagnosed with PCOS and how long before they gave meds such as metformin & clomid to treat the irregular periods?

I really apprechiate your help and advice on this matter. I just want to be a mummy again and give our daughter a little brother or sister.
Thank you for your reply :) I am already taking vitex started it this cycle. I take my pre-natal and an extra Vitamin B6. I am also taking baby asprin. I just don’t understand how the GP hasn’t been able to diagnose me just cus we are a yound cople. I dont want to be in my 30’s to do something about it .

Could I be pregnant?

I have a history of extremely irregular periods. I have been on the pill off and on since I was 13 to regulate it. When I’m not on the pill it has been moderately regular but now I haven’t had my period in a couple of months. I feel pretty much normal (although I’ve gained a little weight which could just be the freshman 5 or 15). I took an over the counter test a few weeks ago and it was negative, but I have ovarian cysts which can effect test results. I’ve had long periods of time where I haven’t had my period before…but never this long while I’ve been sexually active. I’ve been off the pill for about five months. What do you think?

My friend is really worried and I thought I’d try to find her some information about what she may be going through.

She had always had irregular periods and we’ve questioned if she possibly has an ovarian cyst but now we’re thinking she’s possibly pregnant.

She had not had her period since early July and is starting to get very bloated and gaining weight. She had says that she has pains and said it’s:
"usually right below my ribs on the right side, sometimes a little higher. sometimes kinda near my heart. sometimes on the left side of my lower back." and "it’s like a sharp stabbing crampy pain"

She says that she doesn’t feel anything else but she’s very worried.

Birth Control Questions?

I’m 17 & I’m starting to get more into learning about birth control & how it works. Well I know the basics, but I don’t know the little things. For example: can it really risk your chance of having breast cancer, getting ovarian cysts, gain more weight and increase breast size.

My main use for this would be to help clear my skin a little (it’s not terrible, but I’d like it to be a little better) & to control my irregular periods & lately my past 2 periods, i’ve had the worst cramps. I never use to get cramps. Aside from that, I do want to be safe if I when & if I have sex.

Also could you recommended some good birth control brands.

I’m 5′1, 95 pounds, slim & an active athlete (gymnastics, soccer, track) if that information makes any difference

ovarian cyst ? ?

ok so i am a lil bit scared to go to a doctor and he tells me that i have an ovarian cyst.
well i know my mom and my grandma had it and they keep saying it runs in the family, so now im having all these stupid symptoms like irregular periods , pelvic pain that sometimes hurts so much i cant move and other times i just keep on walking and some other stuff… well my question is..had anyone else had an ovarian cyst , how does it feel like ? should i be concerned or its prob. nothing big…, helllpp me ..im scared. Just tell me ur story

My husband and I will start trying in the near future and my problem is my period is completely irregular. It used to be very regular and the same length and everything. But then I got on the pill and it made me sick, so I switched to a lower dose pill and I had a non-stop period for a year. Then I tried Depo…another 6-month long period. Then I gave up with it. Since then it has been totally off. About I year ago I had an IUD placed. That has done nothing to regulate me but hasn’t made it worse. My doctor recently put me on Yaz to try to fix my irregular cycle and cobat my right ovarian cysts that have developed. With Yaz I gained a ton of weight and guess what…still irregular. Soon I will be off everything and I know I’ll still be irregular (because I was during that multi-year time when I didn’t take anything). So I would like to know FROM WOMEN WHO HAVE HAD SEVERELY IRREGULAR PERIODS what they did to attempt to track their cycles leading up to conception. Thanks!

PCOS disappeared can this be true?

I’m wondering if your body can be cured of your PCOS… (if you dont know what it is look up Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)

From 11-18yrs old, i had regular cycles every month, then at 18 my period only came every 3-6 months, they would be short, crampy, and then symptoms such as weight gain,unwanted hair,mood swings, cysts on the ovaries started… it was confirmed at the age of 20.. im 23 now

The irregular periods continued until last October, it came for 2 months in a row! and then i fell pregnant in December

So wondering if it can just disappear??, especially getting pregnant so quick after 2 regular cycles! I unfortunately lost my baby, at 20wks, in May, but since then my periods have STAYED regular!!!

Although i am very depressed about losing my baby, i somehow feel like maybe the PCOS disappeared and i am somewhat happy if this is true!

Wondering if anyone might have had this happen, and if they have had regular periods randomly after many years of an irregular one, do you know why??

Why after losing my baby has it gone back to a permenant Regular (3 periods in a row) & EXACTLY on time??!!

This has NOT happened since i was 18! and thats 5 years of irregular periods!! and i have no idea what ive done different…

Thanks to all answers.

I got it after I gave birth to my daughter. I had a bad pregnancy and a hard 56 hr labor with a lot of complications, this being one of the after effects. I started gaining weight and the doctor did all kinds of test on me before finding out it was hypothyroid disease. Everytime I try to take my synthroid I end up stopping because it makes me bleed..like a period …all the time and a lot. My doctor said its because the med is trying to regulate through my body and it can take up to 6 weeks. Ive never taken it that long thoug because I dont want the constant bleeding..and I am trying to conceive…cant do that with all the bleeding. Thyroid disease effects your metabolism and hormones. Does this happen to anyone else on thryroid medications? Im 25 if that helps anyone. Also I have irregular periods due to ovarian cysts and just getting off the depo shot after 6 years. When I dont take my med I dont have regular periods but as soon as I take it I bleed within 2 days. Any thoughts?

Not all women with PCOS share the same symptoms. These are some of the symptoms of PCOS:
* infrequent menstrual periods, no menstrual periods, and/or irregular bleeding
* infertility (not able to get pregnant) because of not ovulating
* increased hair growth on the face, chest, stomach, back, thumbs, or toes—a condition called hirsutism (HER-suh-tiz-um)
* ovarian cysts
* acne, oily skin, or dandruff
* weight gain or obesity, usually carrying extra weight around the waist
* insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
* high cholesterol
* high blood pressure
* male-pattern baldness or thinning hair
* patches of thickened and dark brown or black skin on the neck, arms, breasts, or thighs
* skin tags, or tiny excess flaps of skin in the armpits or neck area
* pelvic pain
* anxiety or depression due to appearance and/or infertility
* sleep apnea—excessive snoring and times when breathing stops while asleep
please help i am totally bummed out
